“Stop thinking you’re doing it all wrong. Your path doesn’t look like anybody else’s because it can’t, it shouldn’t, and it won’t.”
― Eleanor Brownn
Unfollow, block or delete social media accounts that make you feel bad about yourself. Social media can be a blessing or a curse depending on how you control what you are viewing and how you are interpreting it in regard to comparing others to yourself. It is so easy to scroll through Instagram and to start comparing your life to others instead of looking at others for motivation or inspiration. Especially if you are already having an off day where you feel bad about yourself scrolling through social media may make you feel worse. My favorite social media outlet is Instagram and it is probably the worst in terms of comparing yourself to others. Since Instagram is all about eye-catching photos and captions it is all about being extra and captivating to capture people’s attention. Therefore, when we follow certain accounts we may feel like we are not doing much with our lives, feel broke or bad about our appearance. Comparing yourself to others in any way will automatically without a doubt give a blow to your self-esteem. You will start to feel inadequate and then feel like giving up because you already don’t feel like you are enough. Therefore, I wanted to teach you how you can have better habits when you scroll through your social media accounts because we all know they are not going anywhere and so you must learn how to have a better mindset when scrolling through them.
Unfollow. Get rid of accounts that make you feel bad about yourself. Some accounts may not have anything to offer you in terms of value instead it just makes you feel like you are not good enough. Unfollow those accounts. For example, I followed this health account for ideas on healthier meals because I thought it would help me with ideas of things to make for lunch and dinner. Instead it made me feel bad about my choices of food. It showed a picture of oatmeal saying this is a “bad” carb to limit or stay away. I eat oatmeal every weekday because I thought it was a healthy option and I started to feel bad about it. I then though this is ridiculous and unfollowed that account. You have to unfollow nonsense accounts that try to make you feel bad about yourself so they can sell you their diet program or whatever.
Follow. Follow accounts that bring you value and positivity. I think the biggest reason I can look in the mirror with complete confidence about my body is that I began following girls who have similar bodies like mine. I started to see them wearing cute outfits and embracing their rolls, sag, cellulite etc. They looked so beautiful and happy and looked carefree. I began to feel the same way when looking in the mirror because I finally saw a body like mine in a positive light instead of highlighted as negative. I also follow accounts with positive mindset thinking to help me get motivated. When Instagram started there wasn’t many or if at all body positive accounts but now there are so many and begin your own to help spread the positivity. The account @masterselflove will always highlight different body types, positive thinking and tips.
Get Inspired. When you start to get into a positive thinking mindset and feeling better about yourself you can start to look at others accounts for inspiration rather than comparing your life to theirs. Now that I feel great about myself and stay focused on my own path I look at certain pages for inspiration and when I create my own spin on their inspiration it makes me feel empowered. I then can inspire others to do the same. When you compare yourself to others you don’t really get motivated if anything it deters you from being your best. Also, if someone inspires you ask them questions or words of advice. Learn from others instead of thinking they are better than you if you think they can teach you something.
The best lesson and move here is to work on promoting a positive thinking mindset for yourself. You can’t move forward with your life if you are stuck comparing yourself to others. You will only feel bad about yourself and that will hold you back in life. Instead, remember you are you and that is your superpower. You also have something amazing to contribute to this world and if you choose to show that on social media that is your choice. If you use social media for inspiration rather than comparing yourself to others you can boost your self-confidence. Unfollow any account out there made to make you feel .bad about yourself that is key. You can control what you consume and how you react and I hope you choose positivity.
Are you guilty of comparing yourself to others? What are your favorite body positive accounts?
